AI-Driven Shopping (Agentic Commerce): What's Changing Now for Shopware Merchants

Agentic Commerce i.e. AI-driven shopping is fundamentally changing online retail. In quick succession, OpenAI and PayPal have presented their plans.

ChatGPT Instant Checkout

With "Instant Checkout," OpenAI has launched direct purchasing within ChatGPT. Technically, this is based on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard that controls order and payment flows between AI agents, shops, and payment providers. In the first phase, the focus is on single-item purchases and the US market; further regions and cart functions have been announced. Important for merchants: They remain the Merchant of Record, meaning prices, taxes, shipping, and support continue to run through the existing shop infrastructure.

Shopware ACP Prototype

To enable Shopware shops to connect quickly, Shopware published an ACP prototype in record time. It connects ACP flows with the real Shopware cart, takes prices, taxes, and shipping into account, and allows demos as well as production-like tests. In practice, this means: with this prototype, Shopware merchants can run through the entire journey from "find product in chat" to the order. Particularly important here is the smooth payment function.

Agentic Commerce Services from PayPal

This is where PayPal comes into play. Together with OpenAI, PayPal has announced support for Instant Checkout in ChatGPT. In addition, PayPal is launching its own "Agentic Commerce Services" to prepare merchants for AI-driven commerce.

These services comprise two building blocks: Agent Ready is an agentic payment solution that enables millions of existing PayPal merchants to accept payments on AI interfaces. Store Sync is a new feature that makes a merchant's product data discoverable within leading AI channels.

Looking ahead, PayPal plans to connect large parts of its merchant network to AI platforms such as Perplexity via an ACP server, so that products become visible in various AI channels without complex individual integration. The rollout is set to take place in stages: Currently, PayPal merchants can sign up for Store Sync. The discoverability of merchants on platforms like Perplexity and ChatGPT is expected to begin before the end of the year. The Agent Ready function will be available in early 2026.

What does concrete AI-driven shopping look like?

One possible scenario makes it tangible: A customer asks ChatGPT about a specific product. The agent finds your listing, shows price and availability, and offers "Buy now" directly in the chat. The payment runs token-based, without any media break; the order lands in the Shopware backend as usual. On repeat purchases, there's no need to re-enter payment and address data, which noticeably improves conversion – especially on mobile.

What does this mean for Shopware shops?

For Shopware merchants, this above all means: Data quality takes on a particularly important significance once again. Product information should be complete and machine-readable – title, variants, availability, delivery and return policies, images. AI agents prefer the source that responds most reliably. At the same time, control over prices, taxes, and fulfillment remains with the merchants. ACP is an interface for gaining new reach and not a parallel shop system.

The most important facts about Agentic Commerce in brief:

• ChatGPT introduces "Instant Checkout": Buying directly in the chat – initially with a focus on single-item purchases and the USA, further phases to follow.
• Shopware provides an ACP plugin/prototype that uses real Shopware carts and demonstrates PayPal flows.
• PayPal is launching Agentic Commerce building blocks (including delegated payments, catalog sync) to quickly bring merchants and AI platforms together.
• For merchants, this means: making product data and checkout processes agent-ready
